benefit concert, Sayaw Manila, last February 27 and 28, 2016 at St. Cecilia’s Hall in St. Scholastica’s College, Manila. The event had a full house attended by roughly 2,000 people. This year’s Sayaw Manila, as suggested by the title “Isyu”, focused on the different social issues in the Philippines. Ten pieces were choreographed to carry the theme: “Leksyon”, which showed the realities of Philippine education; “Antala”, which presented the deplorable transport system in the country;“Balikbayani”, a piece which centered on the stories of Filipino workers abroad and their families; “Giniling”, which revealed the rampant prostitution in our very soil and the factors that triggered this activity; “Diskoneksyon”, which put into foregroundthe negative effects of technology; “Babae”, a piece which advocated women empowerment and gender equity; “Pab*b*”, which exposed the seeming dumbing down of contemporary media;“Lumad”, which represented the silent battles of the indigenous people;“Upuan”, which highlighted the flaws in Philippine public administration; and“Hikahos”, which depicted the everyday fight of an ordinary Filipino to make ends meet. College-based dance groups also shared the stage with Indayog namely: SinAg, Synergy, MedRhythmics, PHAC, Saliwan, Pharmakinetics, and UP Manila Belle. The WF Squad, UPLB Street Jazz Dance Company, Airdance, TPM, Unschooled, *The ADDLIB, and Danz Edge also performed to support Indayog in its 12th year of giving back to the community. Our nation will always be challenged by social issues, but we can all do our part to somehow ease the situation we are in. It starts with you. It’s you. ISYU. Team Philippines has once again showed their might in the art of street dance at the World Supremacy Battlegrounds championship in Brisbane, Australia last weekend. UPeepz secured gold in the Monster Crew division, while Asian Pride of Mandaluyong grabbed gold in the Open Division. Two other teams, defending champion FMD Xtreme (Open) from Marikina City and ReCab (Monster) from Cabanatuan City secured the silver medal in their respective divisions. Over 1,000 dancers and 100 international hip-hop teams from across Australia, New Zealand, USA, China, Taiwan, Guam, India and South Africa participated in the three-day long street dance festival. The World Supremacy Battlegrounds, now in its 11th year, featured crew competitions, dance and rap battles, market and food stalls, celebrity meet and greets, dynamic musical performances and live music from the best DJs in Australia. Almost 6,000 people attended WSB. UPeepz, a University of the Philippines Diliman-based open organization under the college of Human Kinetics, topped the preliminary round in their division last Friday and never looked back. Thirty-six Filipino dancers powered their way to the gold medal in the championship round on Sunday. Philippine dance coach and UPeepz director Chips Beltran was over the moon with the result. “There were a lot of good groups, we were really nervous, “ said Beltran. “Our win means so much to us because we really faced a lot of hardships before going to Australia. We had a lot of injuries, visa issues and monetary problems. Finally we won gold and it means to the world to me. Thank you for everything.” Check out their routine winning on the official MAS Presents Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjKSibASCr0 On the other hand, Asian Pride was an underdog and only placed fourth in the Open prelims. Injuries hampered their performance, but their passion continued to burn. The crew made incessant changes to their routine but topped it off with an undeniable ending in the championship. Asian Pride leader Mimong Samonte was left speechless after their name was called out in front of 2,000 people. “Sir, we are still in disbelief. We are overwhelmed, because there are so many amazing dance crews that joined WSB. We were content to even place in the Top 5 and dance in front of a strong Filipino community that supported us, but God had bigger plans for us, “ said Samonte.
